Short answer: Working memory holds about four items, not seven. The famous "seven plus or minus two" figure came from a 1956 paper and has been substantially revised downward since. What working memory is
Working memory is what you are using right now to hold the start of this sentence while reading the end of it. It is not storage โ it is the small, active workspace where you manipulate information.
It is distinct from long-term memory in a way that matters: long-term memory is effectively unlimited and slow to write, while working memory is tiny, fast, and empties almost immediately. Everything you consciously think about passes through it.
The seven-item myth
George Miller's 1956 paper "The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two" is among the most cited in psychology, and among the most misread. Miller himself was somewhat wry about the number.
Later work using stricter methods โ preventing rehearsal and chunking โ put the real figure closer to four items. The higher figure appears when people are allowed to group and rehearse, which they do automatically.
So the honest position: raw capacity is around four; observed performance is often higher because people are already chunking without noticing.
Measuring your own span
The standard method is a simple span task: a sequence is presented, lengthens by one each round, and you reproduce it. Your span is the longest sequence you can reliably repeat.

Test yourself three times and take the middle result. Single attempts vary a lot, and the first is always the worst because you are still learning the interface rather than the sequence.
Chunking: the only real workaround
You cannot train your way to a bigger workspace. What you can do is put more into each slot.
A phone number as ten separate digits exceeds capacity. As three chunks it fits easily. The capacity did not change โ the size of each item did.
This is the whole explanation for expert memory. Chess masters shown a real game position reproduce it far better than novices. Shown randomly placed pieces, their advantage largely vanishes. They are not remembering more items; they are seeing meaningful groups where a beginner sees individual pieces.

What reduces your span
- Divided attention. The largest factor. Working memory and attention are closely linked, and anything competing for attention takes capacity directly.
- Fatigue. A tired span is measurably smaller. This is why bad sleep makes complex work feel impossible rather than just harder.
- Stress. Anxiety consumes working memory with task-irrelevant thought, which is a well-documented mechanism behind exam performance dropping under pressure.
- Similarity. Items that sound alike interfere with each other. Remembering B, D, G, T is harder than remembering B, K, R, Q.
- Time. Without rehearsal, contents decay within seconds.
Can you train it?
This is where a lot of money was made on a weak claim.
Working memory training programmes reliably improve performance on the trained task. Whether that transfers to general reasoning or academic performance has been tested repeatedly, and the transfer effects are small to absent.

Working with the limit instead of against it
Since capacity is roughly fixed, the practical move is designing around it:
- Write things down. External memory has no capacity limit. Trying to hold six things in mind while working is a choice to work badly.
- Chunk deliberately. Group related items before you try to hold them.
- Reduce competing demands. A notification does not merely interrupt โ it evicts what you were holding.

- Do hard thinking when rested. Your span is genuinely larger.
