Short answer: The average human reaction time to a visual signal is 200–250 milliseconds. Reaction time is fastest in the late teens and twenties, stays fairly flat through the thirties, and slows gradually from around age 40 onwards. Average reaction time by age
These are typical ranges for a simple visual reaction test — you see a light change colour and click as fast as you can.

The differences are smaller than most people expect. A 60-year-old is typically about 60–80 ms slower than a 20-year-old — roughly the time it takes to blink once. Individual variation within an age group is far larger than the gap between age groups.
What counts as a good score
- Under 180 ms — exceptional. Competitive gamers and athletes land here.
- 180–220 ms — fast. Better than most people.
- 220–260 ms — average. Completely normal.
- 260–320 ms — slower than average, often just tiredness or distraction.
- Over 320 ms — worth retesting when rested before reading anything into it.
If you test once and get a bad number, that number means almost nothing. Reaction time varies by 50 ms or more between attempts depending on how alert you are. Take five attempts and use the median.
Why reaction time is not one thing
What people call reaction time is actually a chain of separate steps, and each one takes measurable time:
- Detection — light hits your retina and becomes a nerve signal. Around 20–40 ms.
- Transmission — the signal travels to the visual cortex. Around 50–70 ms.
- Decision — your brain recognises the signal and decides to act. This is the variable part, and the part practice improves.
- Motor response — the command travels to your hand and the muscle contracts. Around 40–60 ms.
You cannot speed up nerve conduction. What you can improve is the decision step and, importantly, your consistency — reducing the number of slow outliers matters more than lowering your single best score.
What actually affects your score
Sleep
The single biggest factor most people control. One short night can add 30–50 ms, which is a bigger effect than twenty years of ageing.
Caffeine
Modest but real. A cup of coffee typically shaves a few milliseconds and, more usefully, reduces the slow lapses that drag your average up.
Time of day
Most people are slowest shortly after waking and in the early afternoon dip, and fastest in the late morning and early evening.
Which hand and which finger
Your dominant hand is usually 5–10 ms faster. Index fingers beat other fingers.
Expectation
If the signal comes after a predictable delay, you get faster because you start preparing. Good tests randomise the delay to prevent this — which is why an honest test sometimes feels harder than a bad one.
Simple reaction time vs choice reaction time
The numbers above are for simple reaction time — one signal, one response. Choice reaction time, where you must pick between responses, is considerably slower, typically 300–500 ms depending on how many options there are.
This is why real-world reactions feel slower than a test suggests. Braking a car is a choice reaction that also includes deciding whether to brake or steer. Driving research generally uses around 1.5 seconds for realistic braking response, not 250 ms.

Can you actually improve it?
Partly. The honest position: the hard physiological limits are not trainable, but several things genuinely help.
- Practise the specific task. Improvements are largely task-specific. Practising a click test makes you better at click tests more than at badminton.
- Fix your sleep. The largest controllable factor by a wide margin.
- Reduce distractions. Divided attention adds more delay than age does.
- Warm up. Your first few attempts at anything are slower. Athletes warm up for this reason.
- Stay generally active. Cardiovascular fitness correlates with faster processing, though the effect is gradual.
What does not work: expensive brain-training programmes that promise broad cognitive gains. The evidence consistently shows you get better at the trained task and very little transfers elsewhere. That is not a reason to avoid brain games — it is a reason to play them because they are enjoyable rather than because of a claimed medical benefit.
